hey everyone, we've made it into N.C. and we are also way past the 100 mile mark. We're at fontana dam this morning, getting ready to head into the smokies. We had snow the other morning on top of Cheoah bald outside of the NOC. We had rain the few days before that but it wasn't too cold so it actually made it kinda fun since everyone had to squeeze into the shelters. We got 13 people in an 8 person shelter one night and 8 people in a six person shelter that was built in 1933 the next night :) really good bonding time. We're still with the same group that we stopped in Hiawassee with. We will be hitting Newfound Gap on friday. miss everyone!

From Hiawassee, GA on March 21
Hey everyone, Jen and I have made it to Hiawassee, Ga. We're about 10 miles from the NC state line so we'll probably be crossing it Sunday or Monday. There is a Dairy Queen in town here so we plan on hanging out at that tomorrow for awhile :-) We ate a huge dinner at a mexican restaurant in town tonight; remember, we really decided to hike the AT so we can gorge on whatever we want when we get to towns!
Mom did the first 30 miles of the trail with us and she did great. She was keeping right up with all of us thru-hikers and made friends with everyone in camp each night. So far it has only rained one day and other than that it's been gorgeous. We have met a lot of really cool people out on the trail and are staying here in town with a few of them.
Jen got her trail name a couple of days ago; it is Newt. She was taking a drink from her water bottle and almost swallowed a small salamander that had gotten in when we filled them up in the morning. Luckily the Steripen that we have didn't kill it and neither did it's short stay in her mouth so we were able to release it about 10 miles from where we had picked it up :-) I haven't done anything too stupid or had anything too crazy happen to me yet so I don't have a trail name as of yet.
For any of you who have a copy of our arbitrary itinerary we are about 15 or 20 miles behind schedule. We might catch up to it eventually and we might not. We are having a great time and no regrets! Hope everyone is doing well,
Sarah
